Transforming Safety and Sustainability: Our Project with Vale Nominated for SAP Innovation Awards 2023

We are proud to announce that our project with Vale, one of the world's largest mining companies, has been selected as an entry for the SAP Innovation Awards 2023. Our project involved developing a Safe Work Permit mobile application that leverages the SAP Business Technology Platform to transform Vale's risk assessment process and enhance the safety of its global workforce.

The Challenge

Vale operates in more than 30 countries and employs over 24,000 people who perform millions of maintenance tasks every year. These tasks involve various hazards and require a rigorous risk assessment process to ensure compliance with Vale's safety standards and regulations. Previously, this process was paper-based and prone to errors, inconsistencies, and delays. Moreover, it generated a huge amount of paper waste that impacted the environment.

The Solution

To address these challenges, we designed and developed a Safe Work Permit mobile application that digitizes the risk assessment process and standardizes its enforcement across all Vale's operations. The app allows workers to conduct risk assessments at the activity location, using their mobile devices, even when offline. The app also enables workers to attach photos and documents, sign digitally, and access dashboards and reports. The app integrates seamlessly with SAP PM and SAP SuccessFactors to streamline the workflow and data management.

The Technology

We chose to build the app on the SAP Business Technology Platform because it offers a comprehensive set of tools and services that enable rapid and agile development of enterprise-grade applications. We used SAP Business Application Studio (SAP BAS) as our development environment, which provides better integration with SAP technologies such as MDK, CAP, SAPUI5, and HANA Cloud. SAP BAS also offers faster and custom build processes, local cloud-based development availability, easier pre-deployment tests, useful default linters setup, powerful wizard templates, and a friendly and community integrated interface for developers (VSCODE).

The Benefits

The Safe Work Permit app has delivered significant benefits for Vale in terms of safety, efficiency, compliance, and sustainability. Some of the benefits include:

• Better availability of the annex forms in the field;
